The Situation:
The National Institute of Meteorology issued Red (Risk of Flooding) and Orange (Heavy Rains) Alerts for heavy rainfall for most of São Paulo, Brazil. A large thunderstorm system is bringing periods of heavy rainfall to most of the area through 31 January. The expected rainfall will likely cause flooding, rising river levels, and possible landslides.
Possible Effects:
Heavy rain and storm force winds
Heavy rain which may reduce visibility a times and cause flooding
Strong winds which may knock down trees and hinder recovery efforts
Traffic delays and poor road conditions
Cancelled, delayed, or rerouted flights
Dangerous driving conditions on bridges, especially during periods of strong winds and gusts
Power outages in homes and places of work
Mitigating Measures to Apply:
Check with the destination (i.e. accommodations, work sites, etc.) to ensure they are open and operating
Monitor local news and weather media for updates
Allow extra time for travel to and from the destination and airport
Use extreme caution when traveling near coastal areas and over bridges
Keep extra bottled water in lodging
Keep electronics charged and maintain contact throughout the remainder of the trip
Confirm flight itinerary prior to departure to the airport
