The Situation:
On Friday, 2 August 2019, seven bombs were found in Bangkok and Nonthaburi exploding
in five locations (four in Bangkok and one in Nonthaburi), injuring four people (all in
Bangkok). Bomb experts claim the types of bombs used were designed to cause panic
rather than inflict casualties. The timing of the bombs during the high-profile ASEAN
meeting strongly suggests that the motivation was to embarrass the government and take
advantage of the international media presence in the area.
No further bombs have been discovered since Saturday in connection to the original series
of explosions. Two men have been arrested and eight more are being sought. Several
erroneous reports have already linked the situation to southern insurgents, and while
highly possible, the explosions remain under investigation.
