Situation:
Two transportation unions have called for a nationwide strike and a march on
Friday, July 26, to protest poor rail services. Metrorail will run reduced and limited services
on 26 July 2019.
Marches will take place in the following areas on Friday, 26 July 2019:
Cape Town: Cape Town Station, 10am-3pm
Johannesburg: End Street, North Park, 10am-3pm
Pretoria: In front of Hatfield Court/Tshwane Fire and Ambulance Station, 10am- 3pm
Durban: Gather at King Dinuzulu Park, 10am-3pm
A heightened security presence is likely, particularly along the march route. Transportation
disruptions, including to train services and an increased demand for taxis and other modes
of transportation, are expected during the strike period.
Possible Effects:
Disrupted modes of transportation
Increases in traffic, especially near protest sites
Roads blocked by protestors with little to no notice
Protests which have the possibility of turning violent
Mitigating Factors to Apply:
Avoid all protests, demonstrations, and large crowds, which have the possibility of turning violent
If you are caught in a blockade:
Remain calm
Do not exit your vehicle
For emergencies, dial 112
Allow extra time for travel
Monitor local and social media for updates
Enroll in the Safe Traveler program (STEP) to receive warnings from the U.S. Embassy
