CIVIL UNREST - CHINA

Protests have taken place across China directed against current COVID curbs. Demonstrations have occurred in Beijing, Nanjing, Wuhan, Shanghai, Urumqi, Lanzhou, Xi'an, and Guangzhou.

A recent protest took place in Urumqi after a fire killed 10 people. The government denied their deaths were caused by COVID restrictions, but the people believe they were unable to get out of their homes. In Shanghai, protesters were heard saying, "Xi Jinping, step down" and "Communist party, step down." Openly criticizing the government is unusual in China and can result in harsh penalties. In the event of additional civil unrest, law enforcement counter measures are highly likely which could result in violent clashes. Travelers should comply with law enforcement instructions and protests should be avoided. In addition to avoiding any demonstrations or large gatherings, travelers should also refrain from comments (verbal, written, social media) or actions that could be seen as adverse to the government.
