The Situation:
Protests and demonstrations are possible in the coming days, especially in Bengaluru and other urban centers following the death of a cab driver who took his own life to protest against lack of government assistance for rising fuel prices and Covid-19 lockdowns. Demonstrations are likely at bus stations, government buildings, public squares, major traffic intersections, and monuments. Participation in gatherings may range from dozens to a few hundred people.
Currently, bus drivers affiliated with multiple state-run transport corporations are striking across Karnataka State. Workers employed by four transport bodies, including the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), commenced the strike to demand the state increase transport workers' salaries. While some bus corporations have resumed some services, moderate disruptions are ongoing. Commuters on routes affected by the strike are using private buses, mini-busses, cabs, auxiliary trains, among others.
Possible Effects:
Protests or demonstrations, especially near government buildings and city centers
Large crowds, which may attract unwanted attention or become violent
Increased traffic, especially near city centers, government buildings, and other demonstration sites
Limited transportation options and disruptions to public transportation
Mitigating Factors to Apply:
Avoid large crowds, which have the possibility of turning violent and may also serve as a catalyst for COVID-19 spread
Allow extra time to travel to/from the airport, supplier, and accommodations
Avoid travel after dark, when civil unrest tends to escalate
Prepare for disruptions caused by protests, such as increased traffic/security, blocked roads, and potential travel into demonstration sites (i.e. airports, highways, government buildings)
Practice social distancing or wear a mask when it can be maintained
