Australia Air Quality Health Alert

The Situation:

A poor air quality advisory was issued on 7 January 2020 across most of Victoria warning those of the unhealthy quality of air for people with sensitivities. Smoke from bushfires in East Gippsland, North East Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania is currently affecting air quality across most of Victoria.


Fires in the region are resulting in air quality in the HAZARDOUS category on Tuesday, however air quality should reduce to VERY POOR on Wednesday.


Pollution and haze may cause:

  • Wheezing

  • Coughing

  • Chest discomfort

  • Shortness of breath

Mitigating Factors to Apply:

  • Avoid prolonged exposure outdoors

  • Limit outdoor activity, especially during times of elevated levels of pollution

  • Wear a face mask, when practical and necessary

  • Keep windows and doors closed

  • Monitor local media and news for updates - link

  • Enroll in a safe traveler program to receive warnings from your preferred embassy
